In 1995, a few Amish farmers in the New Wilmington, Pa., area decided to start a cooperative to grow produce for wholesale buyers. They grew mostly bell peppers, cucumbers, and cabbage in the first several years. In 1998, a local auctioneer started a small produce auction behind the New Wilmington Livestock Auction, and the Coop was discontinued. The remaining growers joined the produce auction, and an advisory board was voted in.
After some time, the produce auction outgrew the facility they were using at the time. It was then that the auction board and a few investors decided to build a new facility on State Route 208 in 2003 to host the produce auction. The four or five shareholders formed New Wilmington Building and Land (NWB&L).
NWB&L owns the buildings and the land. They then lease it to New Wilmington Produce Auction. It started as New Wilmington Produce Auction until 2006, when it changed ownership and became Tri County Produce Auction. It then changed ownership in 2019 and changed back to New Wilmington Produce Auction. It again changed hands in 2023 and remains as the New Wilmington Produce Auction.
Today, the New Wilmington Produce Auction is owned and operated by Dan Byler. The mission of the New Wilmington Produce Auction is to provide service to the buyer and seller in the best possible way by providing the local farmers with a profitable outlet as well as providing the buyer with local, high-quality produce.
The Auction is on every Tuesday and Friday starting in the last week of April through the last week of October and on every Thursday from the last week of July through the first week of September.
